The Chimei Museum was founded in 1992 by entrepreneur Hsu Wen-long and is Taiwan's most renowned private museum with the richest collection. The founder's initial intention was inspired by his early exposure to museums and cultural arts. He aimed to establish a museum to be enjoyed and shared by the public, serving as a sanctuary for the soul enriched by art and culture.
The museum's permanent exhibits are sourced from the Chimei Cultural Foundation and the collections of the Hsu Wen-long family, amounting to tens of thousands of items.
The collection's highlights include:
The largest and most exquisite collection of violins in the world, featuring works by major violin makers from around the world;
Taiwan's most comprehensive collection of Western paintings and sculptures, aimed at constructing a foundational context of Western art history;
Asia's largest collection of animal specimens, designed to depict a vivid natural history;
Asia's most complete display of precious ancient weapons from various countries, revealing the historical and technological evolution through war weaponry;
Art and music that are universally understood, from 3-year-old children to nonagenarian grandparents, in an accessible palace of aesthetic culture.
The Chimei Cultural Foundation is committed to the responsibilities of collection, preservation, and restoration.
"These artifacts are treasures of world culture and assets of the Taiwanese people. We are just temporary custodians, and these will be passed down through generations," defined the founder's mission for the Chimei Cultural Foundation.
Utilizing the Chimei Museum as a platform, the Chimei Museum Foundation focuses on exhibitions, educational promotion, and other activities.
"Good artifacts should not only be appreciated by oneself but also shared with many; collecting artifacts should not just cater to personal taste but also to styles that can be appreciated by the public," defined the founder's core goals for the Chimei Museum Foundation.
In 2014, the Chimei Museum moved to the Tainan Metropolitan Museum Park Chimei Pavilion and reopened in January 2015. The building was funded and constructed by the Chimei Corporation and then donated to the Tainan City Government. The Chimei Museum Foundation obtained the operating rights and will manage it for 50 years. Adhering to the founder's philosophy, the Chimei Museum will be diligently managed to elevate cultural and artistic atmospheres, making Taiwan visible to the world.
