Anping Old Street

Anping Old Street (Yanping Old Street)
Anping Old Street is located to the east of Anping Fort and is the first street built by the Dutch in the Anping area of Tainan three hundred years ago. It is known as "Taiwan Street" and "Stone Slab Street," and is also called the "First Street of Taiwan" and "Yanping Old Street." The buildings on Yanping Street are mainly traditional Taiwanese houses with soil corners, low red brick houses, and Western-style buildings. The Western buildings often feature white plaster walls and washed stone facades, with hand-crafted reliefs on the railings, column heads, and eaves. Yanping Street was designed according to the Qing Dynasty's urban planning for Taiwan, with a width of only about two to three meters, making it suitable for pedestrians and bicycles, but not for cars.
By 1994, there were plans to widen Yanping Street to accommodate public opinion. However, cultural historians argued that as "Taiwan's First Street," it should be preserved, leading to a halt in the construction. Despite strong local advocacy for widening the road for the sake of residents' safety, Yanping Street was eventually torn down and rebuilt. Today, Zhongxing Street and Xiaozhong Street, which run parallel to Yanping Street, are better-preserved old streets. As you walk through them, you can still see many traces of the old street.
Sword Lion Square in Anping Old Street
Sword Lion Square was established on August 21, 2004, in Anping, the hometown of the Sword Lion, which had been gradually forgotten by people. The founder, Mr. Tsai Jin-An (the owner of Sword Lion Square), aimed to rejuvenate the image of Sword Lion in people's minds. He also wanted to sustain the cultural, tourism, creativity, and resources of the Anping area. Therefore, he used "Anping Sword Lion," the most representative cultural item of the area, as the main theme to develop a place for visitors to explore, named " Sword Lion Square."
Sword Lion Square also regularly hosts related cultural and artistic activities, such as sword lion painting, visits, lectures, creative product design, and bicycle tours to find sword lions.
